Tommy Tutone lead singer stated on WGM News that the number was real and it was the number of a girl he knew. As a joke, he wrote in on a bathroom wall in a motel they were staying at. "We laughed about it for years," he said. This caused a fad of people dialing 867-5309 and asking for "Jenny".
